Can you notarize a document if the signer isn't present?

No. Physical appearance is strictly required by South Carolina law. The person signing the document must be face-to-face with the notary to verify their identity and willingness to sign.

What form of ID do I need to bring?

You must present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms of identification include:

• State Driver’s License

• State ID Card

• U.S. Passport

Can you notarize a document that has blank spaces?

No. To prevent fraud, all blanks and fields on the document must be completely filled out before the notarization takes place.

Can a notary public notarize their own signature?

No. A notary must remain a completely impartial witness, meaning they can never notarize their own signature or any document in which they have a direct financial interest.

Can you help me draft a document or give legal advice?

No. In South Carolina, non-attorney notaries are strictly prohibited from drafting legal documents, helping you fill out legal text, or offering legal counsel.
